Samsung Galaxy Alpha vs Samsung Galaxy S5 – Which One to Buy?

samsung alpha vs samsung s5

We all know that the Samsung Galaxy S5 is the Samsung’s flagship smartphone but the Samsung Galaxy Alpha just launched with the AT&T and it is certainly the best designed phone from Samsung we have ever seen. It is stunning, compact and has a set of stunning premium element that you may really like to experience.

In terms of performance it competes with the Galaxy S5. The Galaxy Alpha has the superior design though it follows the same design principles of the Galaxy series but it has a premium element to its construction. It’s more thinner lighter and feels great in hand. The Galaxy S5 has a water-resistant construction. The most noted difference between these two devices is the display.

The Samsung Galaxy has a 5.1 inch super AMOLED display with 1080×1920 pixels resolution and 432 ppi pixel density over the smaller 4.7 inch Super AMOLED display with 720×1280 pixels resolution and 312 ppi pixel density of the Samsung Galaxy Alpha. That’s because the Alpha relies on the PenTile matrix arrangement. So when you zoom in and take a close look in the Galaxy Alpha it’s not as sharp compared to the Galaxy S5. But it surely does offer a better and more accurate color reproduction.

The user experience may be pretty much identical on these two devices but with an exception that the Galaxy S5 has a couple more features. But the Alpha being a new device has no such new features to offer. Both these devices have the multi-window support so you have enhanced multi-tasking experience. They both have the Air View gesture so that you can hover your finger over certain elements to get previews. Both these devices have the Samsungs core services such as S Voice and S Health but the Samsung Galaxy S5 being a Flagship has a couple more features like Air Gestures where you can wave your hand over the display to scroll the webpage or even through the Gallery. The Galaxy S5 even has a Smart Remote app which turns it into a universal remote.

Both the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Alpha are powered by the same processor.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC

2,5 GHz Quad Core Krait 400 CPU

Adreno 330 GPU

32 GB internal storage

The performance is pretty much identical of the two devices. Both are pretty fast and really great for gaming but in some benchmark tests one phone does better than the other. However they are mostly identical in terms of performance.

Samsung has doubled the memory in the Alpha than the S5 and it has 32 GB of internal storage versus 16 GB in the S5. But the Galaxy S5 benefits with the micro SD card slot which is something won’t get in the Galaxy Alpha. They are both great in terms of multimedia consumption and they support a wider range of video codecs and plays them smoothly but the larger and high resolution display of the Galaxy S5 makes it more ideal and when it comes to the audio the Galaxy S5’s speaker just seems more robust whereas the Galaxy Alpha speaker is still pretty powerful but has strange tone at a louder setting.

They do differ in Camera specs. The Galaxy Alpha has a 12 MP autofocus camera with LED flash and 31mm (F2.2) lens while the Samsung Galaxy S5 has a slightly larger i.e. 16 MP autofocus camera with LED flash and ½.6” sensor (F2.2) lens. But it’s really tough to distinguish which has the superior camera because take some really sharp looking outdoor shots but at the end you would surely love the photos taken by the Galaxy S5 with a closer look you will surely find that the Galaxy S5 takes much more detailed shots than the Alpha and at the same time it offers results under low-light conditions.

When it comes to the 1080p video recording quality it’s really tough to distinguish much difference as they both have smooth 4k recordings, quick focus and good exposure.

The Galaxy Alpha has more superior battery life than the Galaxy S5. In a battery benchmark test the Galaxy S5 achieved 7hrs 38mins which is pretty excellent for any smartphone now-a-days but the Alpha achieved a little more i.e. 7hrs 50mins.

Samsung Galaxy Alpha is a undoubtedly stunning phone with performance much like Galaxy S5 but it’s price is identical to the Galaxy S3. On the other hand the Samsung Galaxy S5 has a larger and higher resolution display and on top of it all the other features that come with it are micro SD card slot, IR Blaster and also have a Water-resistant body. So it makes more sense to go with the Samsung Galaxy S5 but if you are fascinated with the size and premium feel you may wish to go with the Samsung Galaxy Alpha.
